Bibliophile anglais né dans le comté d'York. Il a vécu a Sheffield. Il fonda une entreprise de fabrication d'outils avec son frère en 1867. Elle fut dissoute en 1891 après avoir rapporté beaucoup d'argent et permis à William Crampton d'acquérir beaucoup de livres et de manuscrits anciens. Crampton vendit localement sa bibliothèque aux enchères en 1899, 1900, 1901 et à Londres en mai 1904 à l'occasion de son déménagement. Il est alors qualifié d'esquire.
